Toronto International Film Festival

Toronto is a city of lights, cameras, and action. Every autumn, thousands of movie lovers from around the world descend on Toronto to take part in the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF, as it's affectionately known, is one of the biggest festivals of it's kind. We at Eurocentres are very fortunate to be located only a few steps from the main venues and have been enjoying all of the attendant excitement. Just a block east of us is the Scotiabank Theatre, Toronto's largest movie venue with over a dozen screens. Across from it is the National Film Board of Canada, where, for only $2, individuals can spend the day choosing and watching as many NFB films as they like. And just 2 blocks south of us is the newly opened Bell Lightbox, a building devoted to the art and history of filmmaking. We're very much looking forward to the Tim Burton exhibit which will be debuting in November.

Of course, the film festival isn't the only connection Toronto has to the world of moving pictures. Every year, dozens of movies are filmed in our fair city. Just this past week, the building to our south has been serving as a film set. Yesterday, an entire street was closed off for filming. It's not uncommon to pass a movie star on the way to school! Yes, there's always something, or someone, to see in Toronto.

IELTS, Cambridge & The Gun Slinger

It’s a busy time here and all over the world for ESL students at the moment. Did you know that the Cambridge FCE & CAE courses started last week, and for the next 12 weeks our students are preparing themselves for their exams in December. On Thursday we had 26 students doing their first full day practice examination and many of them were went home exhausted but happy with themselves. Also this week 2 more of our students took the IELTS exam, so we are crossing our fingers and waiting for their result (which will be great of course). Finally, it looks like one of our students may be applying for Stephen King’s Editor’s job, as he found a couple of mistakes in the ‘Gun Slinger’!

Student Testing Success

Here at Eurocentres Toronto, we have students from around the world, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and South America, all studying English for any number of reasons; some for fun, some to further their careers, and others for the chance to experience a new and exciting culture, firsthand. One of the foremost goals for many of the students who join us is to achieve a high score on one of the standardized English proficiency that we can help prepare them for. These tests, which can open so many doors, include IELTS, TOEIC, TOEFL, and the Cambridge exams. We are so very proud of the students we have had the pleasure of working with this past year and the success that they have had. Two of our TOEIC students, from Japan and Korea respectively, recently scored 810 and 955 on their tests; a group of students from France and Switzerland all passed the Cambridge FCE with flying colours; and we are presently working with a group of scholarship students from Saudi Arabia to prepare them for IELTS. We are expecting great things. In short, our student's results are a testament to what is possible when one combines a dedicated, first rate staff with motivated learners. Three cheers for both and to even greater successes ahead!
