Eurocentres Canada Blog

Success! It's what we're enjoying at Eurocentres Toronto.

Our first success story centres around a trio of students who joined us early this year. All three students were from Saudi Arabia and were studying under the auspices of the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau. At the time they began, each was a true beginner, with very little in the way of English ability whatsoever. Over time though, through hard work and determination on their part and ours, we helped to build their skills and confidence. Finally, after 6 months of study, they felt they were ready to put their abilities to the test. With the help of our test coordinator, they registered for and sat IELTS, one of the most widely respected and challenging of the English proficiency tests. After several weeks of nervous anticipation, we finally received their results. They were nothing short of amazing. From a beginning point of nearly zero, two of the students attained a level 4 on the test and the third reached level 5! We couldn't have been happier for them. All three have now graduated and will be attending university here in Canada in the near future. We are so proud of their accomplishments and wish them the best of fortunes.

Our second success story concerns a former student of ours, a young man from Japan who is still living in Canada. This past summer, the young man in question was interested in finding summer work and our social activities coordinator volunteered to help him in his hunt. As it turned out, one of the tour companies that we have worked with was looking for someone to lead canoe tours and he fit the bill perfectly. Since then he has been enjoying his life in Toronto and, in the process, becoming better and better at canoing, something which he hadn't previously tried. So much so in fact, that this past week, he was interviewed by Global News and appeared on their 6 and 11pm newscasts talking about his experiences! He is a a former student of the month and a role model for all of our students. We're very proud to have taught him.

There’s Snow better reason to come to Vancouver

Although it’s still only November, the cold La Nina winter which was predicted has started in full force. Freezing levels have dropped and with it has come the snow. In fact, it’s snowing in Downtown Vancouver as I’m writing this.

The city looks beautiful draped in a dusty white topping, and students from Brazil, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and hotter climates have been out making snow angels, snowmen and throwing snowballs at each other. To make things even more exciting, all the local Ski hills have opened up. And of course, Whistler (the famous 2010 Winter Olympic site) has seen a flurry of our students snowboarding and skiing down its hills. There is plenty more snow to come, so now is the time to join us………………….

Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha ( الأضحى عيد )

This week brought about the important religious holiday of Eid celebrated by Muslims worldwide. The festival commemorates the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God (Allah), before God (Allah) intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. On this holiday the meat is traditionally divided into three parts to be distributed to others. The family retains one third of the share, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors and the other third is given to the poor & needy.

In true cultural tradition, our Saudi students prepared a delicious home-cooked feast after sun-down and invited everyone to share and embrace their culture. Traditional prayer, tea, soups, mains, desserts and much more was enjoyed by students from Brazil, Switzerland, Korea, Japan and many more. We all learned something new about our classmates and their traditions this week, with the bonus of filling our tummies with delicious food too……..
