Baseball in Toronto

Yesterday was a record setting day here in Toronto. For more than 30 years, Torontonians have cheered enthusiastically as we've followed the exploits of our very own Major League Baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays. We've suffered through the lows of losing, and thrilled to the highs of success and championships, yet, in all those years, no Blue Jay had ever hit 50 or more homeruns in a single season. That all changed in the second inning of yesterday's game against the Seattle Mariners as Jose Bautista clubbed his major league leading 50th dinger of the year. The thing is, as exciting as that was, it paled in comparison to something extraordinary that happened in the very same game.

As any baseball fan can tell you, Ichiro Suzuki has been an unstoppable hitting machine since debuting with the Seattle Mariners a decade ago. His style and approach to the game is truly unique and he has become a hero to many in his home country, Japan. Yesterday, he accomplished something that no other player in the history of baseball has come even close to matching; having 200 or more hits in 10 consecutive seasons. How wonderful that he would do so in Toronto!

Of course, the prospect of seeing a national icon such as Ichiro accomplishing something so special was not to be passed up, and a large group of our students was in attendance, decked out with Japanese flags and cheering as loudly as they could. After the game, they were even interviewed for Japanese television! Needless to say, they were thrilled. It's a memory that they will recount and cherish for the rest of their lives.

Thumbs up for Ichiro, for Major League Baseball, and for all of the great sporting opportunities in Toronto!

Saudi culture, Flipper & a Spanish affair

It’s been a busy week here in Vancouver! This week Vincent the teacher set off to sunny Spain to brush up on his Spanish and spread Canadian English to the streets of Seville. We’ll miss him, but wish him good luck (especially when dodging those charging bulls in Pampalona!). Thursday was the Saudi National Day celebration held by the Saudi Students Society, this was a fantastic introduction to their culture, food & much more!! Students from all different countries & schools (of course including many from ours) attended and enjoyed the event & insight into life in Saudi Arabia. Last but certainly not least, Wednesday was the Vancouver Aquarium visit. It was such a success and the students felt so comfortable that one decided to ask Flipper the dolphin for directions, when he didn’t know the answer she gave him (dropped) a map in his tank for clarification!!!

Work Study Internship Program by Eurocentres Canada

One of the unique experiences offered by Eurocentres Canada is the chance to work for a Canadian company, gaining invaluable international work experience, following the completion of an English course of study. In the past year, we have arranged internships for students from countries all over the world, including Syria, Japan, Brazil, Russia, and Mexico, to name a few. We work diligently to ensure that our students internships are tailored to their past work experience, field of study, aspirations, and interests. Our students have benefited greatly from their experiences in a range of industries, from tourism to client services, human resources to architecture.

Here is what one of our recent graduates had to say about his internship experience:

"My name is Mohamed, 21 from Syria. I’ve finished four years of studying Architecture and I’ve trained at many architectural firms in Syria, but I wanted to achieve more.

My goal is to complete my studies abroad and gain the Master degree in Canada next year, However, I needed to cope with the Canadian atmosphere in general and have a clear idea about architecture in Canada, Therefore I came to Eurocentres Toronto because they offer a course called “English + Work experience” which I think is very useful for my situation. Because I can get two advantages. On one hand improve my English and on the other hand I’ll get the Canadian experience and learn how Canadian architects conduct business and deal with issues.

I spent the first month by just going to school and improving my English. At the same time the center’s manager “Nadya” was searching for a suitable place for doing my internship and setting up interviews with companies and finally she found a very good position for me.

On the second month I started my internship in a very well-known development company in Toronto, My initial feeling was really great honestly contrary to what I expected and everybody was friendly, helpful and cooperator.

Now I’m at the end of my internship at I’m really sad because I want to stay more. I feel at my home although I’m very far away from my country.

It’s really a perfect and a sufficient experience for any field not only architecture and I do indeed advice it for everyone. Because you will get your English terminology improved besides that your skills and the way you manage your profession will dramatically grow.

Finally I’d like to thank every single person who helped me in this “adventure” as I prefer to describe it, and especially Eurocentres Toronto.

Yours sincerely,
Mohamed Anis"
